The day I received a framed piece of birch bark meant so much to me.It was the beginning of my passion-- painting on birch bark.
Birch tree is called a warm tree. It is true. Even in a cold room the piece of birch bark remains warm. Birch bark is distinctive and unique. It has an elegant appearance and white smooth texture. Whenever you look at it you always want to touch it. Birch bark calms you down and helps you to relax.You feel like that because birch bark has very positive energy. People say that if you have birch bark in your house, you will live longer thanks to antiseptic features of it. Some people believe, that birch bark takes their pain away and gives them health. I feel the same. I believe that everything I paint was put in my head and hands by God himself to bring warmth and beauty of the birch tree anew.
The white birch tree is found everywhere in Ontario. Native people in Canada used to build huts and canoes of birch bark because it is very strong and pliable. Do you want to bring Canadian heritage home? Then pick up a landscape painting on the piece of birch bark.
I paint landscapes and icons(see "Icons") on birch bark most of times in acrylics. I use black and white acrylic paints for the landscapes to look natural. They look so familiar to you as if you stand in your front yard in winter or watch your favorite old black and white movie. I do not use any harmful paints or finishes for birch bark paintings to preserve its natural beauty.
